During this time, the town of Atocha, near Madrid, was attacked and conquered by the Moors. Many men were imprisoned. The conquerors allowed only children under 12 to bring food to the captives. Men without families were starving. The women of the town prayed before a statue of the Christ Child in their church and soon a young boy was seen daily, bringing food and water to the hungry. No one knew him, but all noticed that his basket and water container never emptied. The townspeople realized that the Christ Child was miraculously saving the prisoners. A Holy Child of Atocha Resin 6” statue (resina Santo Nino de Atocha) in a home honors this miracle and many pray to the Christ Child in this representation. He is the patron of prisoners, those falsely accused and the needy. Many have been helped after praying to the Holy Child of Atocha.
